Healthy Start Session #3
HS Session #3 featured newly settled refugees from Liberia, Somalia, Ethiopia and Rwanda.
We had a fantastic day with over 60 refugees and 20 volunteers from Bond, Griffith and UQ. One of our clients during the nutrition module was very surprised that it was safe to drink water out of the taps and he had been drinking soft drinks for the last 2 months because he was afraid the water was unclean. It may seem like a basic health issue, but it’s the everyday changes and knowledge that we can impart that will make the biggest difference to a persons life.
We were joined by Brian Fernandez (pictured below) who we met in the AMSA Global Health Conference last year in Cairns. He flew from NSW to specifically to attend HS#3 and we hope we inspired him to start a new chapter of Healthy Start at the University of Western Sydney.
Jack Henderson (pictured below) revamped the Nutrition module to be more interactive and engaging.
The Women’s Health module consistently runs over time as women are able to discuss women’s health topics in a safe and culturally sensitive environment. We were joined once again by Dr. Margaret Kay who guided our volunteers with their teaching.
