Our Healthy Start Session on the 28th of February was unlike any other. Woodridge State Highschool is located in Logan and many adolescents come from low socioeconomic with as many as 500 children from refugee communities. We were very privileged to have been invited by both Greater South Brisbane Medicare Local and Woodridge Highschool to run a Session!
It was a very challenging day for the team and a day of firsts for various reasons. It was our first time outside our home turf at the MDA centre, it was our first highschool visit and it was our first time dealing with adolescents with language and intellectual disabilities. However, the team hailing from QUT, Bond and Griffith Universities were fantastic in the end and the adolescents were surprisingly very engaged with our modules.
Major highlights of the day would have to be when we approached our more tricky health topics: Women’s, Men’s, Alcohol and Drugs Modules. These modules historically have engaged our clients and this was no different!
You’re probably scratching your heads wondering ‘Wait a minute, so Healthy Start is doing school visits now?’. Wherever there is a need Healthy Start will endeavour to fill that need!
